Frequently Asked Questions – SAT Test Prep

Here are some of the most common questions families ask about our programs and services.

Get in Touch

The SAT is a digital standardized test meant to evaluate your college readiness. Administered by the College Board, it’s divided into two halves: Reading & Writing and Math.

The Reading & Writing section will test a student’s ability to read and comprehend short passages on various topics, identifying core elements like the main idea, structure, and key details of a passage. It will also examine your grasp of the English language, covering grammar skills such as vocabulary, punctuation, and sentence structure.

The Math section covers material up to eleventh grade-level math, including skills from algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and data analysis. It emphasizes fluency with these skills and quick problem solving; students will have access to the powerful digital Desmos calculator to help them during the test, meaning it will be more important for students to be able to blend algebraic techniques with visual/geometric intuition.

An Adaptive Test

For both subjects, the SAT is ‘adaptive.’ Each subject section is split into two modules— the first is a mixed difficulty module that everybody takes, while the second module varies depending on your performance on the first. If you perform well enough, you are placed in a hard module, where the questions are markedly more difficult but your overall score range will be higher. If you do not reach that threshold, you’ll instead be placed into an easy module, where the questions are less difficult but your overall score range will be lower.

While the SAT and ACT both test comparable skills across Math and English, there are key differences in how the tests are organized.

First, the SAT is necessarily digital— students will need to be comfortable taking the test on an online platform. While the ACT is offering an online format, students will still be able to take it on traditional pencil and paper.

While the SAT has a single English section that tests both reading and writing skills, the ACT has two distinct sections: one for English, one for Reading. On the Reading side, the SAT exclusively features individual short paragraphs for each question, while the ACT uses longer, page-long passages that multiple questions then reference.

On the Math side, while both sections cover the same broad math topics, the SAT gives students access to the Desmos calculator, which is a much more powerful tool than traditional graphing calculators. ACT students will rely on the traditional TI-84 graphing calculator.

Across both sides, the ACT tends to be more time pressure intensive: students will have, on average, less time per question across all sections.

On average, students improve by more than 200 points on the SAT after completing our course.
