Your best ACT score is within reach
Here are some of the most common questions families ask about our programs and services.
Get in TouchThe ACT is a standardized test developed to evaluate college readiness. Self-administered by the ACT company, it is currently separated into four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science.
The English section focuses on a student’s grasp of the English language; it tests grammar skills like sentence structure and punctuation and effective writing skills like clarity, style, and word choice.
The Math section covers material across algebra, geometry, precalculus, discrete math, and quantitative analysis. Students will have access to an ordinary graphing calculator, and will need to be able to apply their knowledge quickly in particular to succeed under the time limitations.
The Reading section covers a student’s ability to read a larger passage and answer multiple questions about it; these questions will focus on both your ability to identify the main idea of a passage and your ability to find and recall key details in the text.
The Science section tests your ability to read graphs and diagrams and extract relevant information. It also features questions that test your knowledge of the scientific process, experimental design, and basic science concepts standard for 11th-grade students.
The coming changes to the ACT will meaningfully shift how the test is structured; most importantly, the test will no longer require students to take the Science section— it will be entirely opt-in. The test will also be somewhat shorter overall, with less time and fewer questions per section. Overall, students will ultimately have more time per question than on the current iteration.
Moreover, the test will be offered both digitally and on paper— while the test’s contents will be the same, students may choose to either take them on a digital client or with pencil and paper.
While the SAT and ACT both test comparable skills across Math and English, there are key differences in how the tests are organized.
First, the SAT is necessarily digital— students will need to be comfortable taking the test on an online platform. While the ACT is offering an online format, students will still be able to take it on traditional pencil and paper.
While the SAT has a single English section that tests both reading and writing skills, the ACT has two distinct sections: one for English, one for Reading. On the Reading side, the SAT exclusively features individual short paragraphs for each question, while the ACT uses longer, page-long passages that multiple questions then reference.
On the Math side, while both sections cover the same broad math topics, the SAT gives students access to the Desmos calculator, which is a much more powerful tool than traditional graphing calculators. ACT students will rely on the traditional TI-84 graphing calculator.
Across both sides, the ACT tends to be more time pressure intensive: students will have, on average, less time per question across all sections.
